Five day Basic Canoeing Instructor Course
Successful completion of the Basic Instructor course will allow participants to instruct the ORCKA Basic Levels 1 to 4 program, as well as assist on Basic Instructor and Camp Canoeing Instructor courses. The main focus of this course is on teaching skills. Participants will learn how to prepare for teaching,
develop presentation skills and teaching techniques, and learn and practice evaluation. Participants will also further develop their paddling skills to gain more precise control of their canoe, and to develop “demonstration quality” skills. Canoe safety and theory is also an important focus of this course.
Successful participants will receive Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA) Basic Instructor certification. Qualified participants will also receive ORCKA Canadian Style Paddling Levels 1 and 2 certification.
Prerequisites: ORCKA Basic Level 1 to 4, equivalent certification or comparable skills and experience (with permission of course director), at least 16 years of age.

Course length: a minimum of 48 hours
Cost: $595(no taxes) - This includes instruction, ORCKA Basic
Instructor’s manual, ORCKA instructor membership, canoe, paddle,and safety equipment. Participants are
welcome to bring their own equipment if they wish.
What to Bring:
- At least 2 litres of water per person per day for a hot day. Less will do on a cooler day, but it's always better to have too much than not enough! For the sake of the environment, we encourage you to bring a refillable water bottle. Clean drinking water is available at the park.
- Lunch
- Snacks - Trail mix, salted nuts, dried fruit, fruit and granola bars are all good.
- Water shoes, sturdy sandals or running shoes. Bring an extra pair to be kept dry to change into if necessary.
- Warm clothing - You can get cold even on a hot day if you are wet.
- Complete change of clothes. Keep a dry set in your vehicle.
- Rain gear. The course runs regardless of weather (within reason)
- Sunscreen
- Hat and sunglasses
- Bathing suit and towel
