5 Day Basic Canoeing Instructor Course


This 5 day course provides certification to those wishing to instruct ORCKA Basic skills courses. This course focuses on learning and practicing teaching skills and assessment, as well as refining canoeing skills. Basic Canoeing Instructors are employed by camps, school boards and canoeing companies.

Successful candidates will be granted ORCKA Basic Canoeing Instructor certification. Qualified candidates may also be granted Canadian Style Paddling Levels 1 or 2.

Schedule:

This course runs from 9 am to 7:30 pm each day. It runs over the long weekend in May and the weekend that follows.

Saturday, May 26 9AM - 7:30PM
Sunday, May 27 9AM - 7:30PM

Course length:
48 hours

Cost:
$595 (no taxes). This includes individualized instruction, ORCKA program manual, ORCKA 2012 Instructor membership, canoe, PFD, safety equipment and paddle.
A 10% discount is available for groups of 4 or more.

What to Bring:

  • At least 2 litres of water per person per day for a hot day. Less will do on a cooler day, but it's always better to have too much than not enough! For the sake of the environment, we encourage you to bring a refillable water bottle. Clean drinking water is available at the park.
  • Lunch and something for supper. A grocery store and fast food outlets are within a 10 minute drive from the course location, if you prefer to buy something.
  • Snacks. Trail mix, salted nuts, dried fruit, fruit and granola bars are all good.
  • Water shoes, sturdy sandals or running shoes. Bring an extra pair to be kept dry to change into if necessary.
  • Warm clothing. You can get cold even on a hot day if you are wet.
  • Complete change of clothes. Keep a dry set in your vehicle.
  • Rain gear. The course runs regardless of weather (within reason)
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Bathing suit and towel
